Deutsche Bahn Schedules Train Rotations Using Hypergraph Optimization

Deutsche Bahn (DB) operates a large fleet of rolling stock (locomotives, wagons, and train sets) that must be combined into trains to perform rolling stock rotations. This train composition is a special characteristic of railway operations that distinguishes rolling stock rotation planning from the vehicle scheduling problems prevalent in other industries. DB models train compositions using hyperarcs. The resulting hypergraph models are addressed using a novel coarse-to-fine method that implements a hierarchical column generation over three levels of detail. This algorithm is the mathematical core of DB's fleet employment optimization (FEO) system for rolling stock rotation planning. FEO's impact within DB's planning departments has been revolutionary. DB has used it to support the company's procurements of its newest high-speed passenger train fleet and its intermodal cargo locomotive fleet for crossborder operations. FEO is the key to successful tendering in regional transport and to construction site management in daily operations. DB's planning departments appreciate FEO's high-quality results, ability to reoptimize (quickly), and ease of use. Both employees and customers benefit from the increased regularity of operations. DB attributes annual savings of 74 million euro, an annual reduction of 34,000 tons of CO2 emissions, and the elimination of 600 coupling operations in crossborder operations to the implementation of FEO

Cost overrun has become a major issue regarding infrastructure projects. Especially in regard to railway infrastructure and the construction of tunnels, building costs are regularly exceeding the original estimates. This article discusses the reasons for this apparently common fact. In addition, reasons for and consequences of misassigned infrastructure investments are pointed out and a concept called "lifetime-based infrastructure controlling" to improve the efficiency of infrastructure projects is outlined. To highlight the importance of this field of research the serious consequences of wrong investments in infrastructure are shown by discussing the current "Brenner-Basistunnel"-project in Austria. Im Mittelpunkt des Dissertationsprojekts steht die Frage, welche Bedeutung das Ladekapazitätswachstum bei den vier klassischen Verkehrsträgern (Schiffs-, Luft-, Eisenbahn- und Straßenverkehr) hat und wie sich die einzelnen Verkehrsträger insbesondere hinsichtlich der Nutzung von Skaleneffekten entwickelt haben sowie welche Entwicklungsperspektiven für die einzelnen Verkehrsträger in einer langfristigen Perspektive vorliegen. Das ist insofern bedeutend, als dass Skaleneffekte im Verkehr als eine besonders wichtige Quelle für sinkende oder zumindest relativ konstante Transportkosten im Personen- und im Güterverkehr gesehen werden. Nach einer Untersuchung der vier klassischen Verkehrsträger wird konkret anhand des Straßengüterverkehrs untersucht, welche Auswirkungen eine Erweiterung der erlaubten Fahrzeugdimensionen über die derzeit gültigen Werte hinaus hätte. Diese Untersuchung wird für Deutschland konkret durchgeführt, da dort derzeit ein konkreter Diskurs über die Zulassung größerer Straßengüterkraftfahrzeuge geführt wird. Dabei wird eine gesamtwirtschaftliche Perspektive eingenommen und es werden die intra- und intermodalen Auswirkungen untersucht. (Autorenref.
